FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Freshman Richard Irvin, making his
first start, threw his fifth touchdown pass of the game with 43
seconds left to give Tulane a 35-31 win over TCU on Saturday.
Irvin's 12-yard pass to Chris Bush in the closing seconds capped
a 99-yard drive for Tulane (5-5, 3-4 Conference USA). Irvin,
filling in for the injured Lester Ricard, finished 22-of-37 for 282
yards with TD passes of 3, 3, 11, 25 and 12 yards.
The 10-play winning drive gave Tulane its first lead and came
after TCU (5-6, 3-5) was on the verge of putting the game away.
Leading 31-28 with 3:57 left, TCU failed to convert a 4th-and-goal
from the Tulane 2-yard line when Robert Merrill was stopped on the
The Horned Frogs lost bowl eligibility, ending their streak of
six straight bowl appearances. A victory most likely would have
earned the Horned Frogs an appearance in the Fort Worth Bowl.
The winning catch was Bush's second score of the night. He had
six catches for 136 yards. Matt Forte led the Green Wave on the
ground with 97 yards on 28 carries.
Merrill led TCU with 143 yards and three touchdowns on 34
carries. He scored on runs of 3, 10 and 4 yards, the last one
putting TCU up 28-21 in the third quarter.
Filling in for the injured Lonta Hobbs, Merrill recorded his
second straight 100-yard game. He had 149 yards in last week's
42-17 win over Southern Mississippi.
Brandon Hassell was 13-of-22 for 217 yards and a touchdown for
TCU. Cory Rodgers was his favorite target, with 10 catches for 141
yards and a score.
