JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- Justin Stepp caught a 9-yard pass from Ingle Martin on the final play of the game Thursday night and Furman rallied for a 37-35 victory over Jacksonville State.

Furman (1-0) drove 74 yards over the final 1:22 to the winning touchdown in a game that saw the teams combine for more than 800 yards in total offense.

Jacksonville State (0-1) was trying to avenge a 49-7 loss to the Paladins in the first round of last year's I-AA playoffs.

Furman took a 31-21 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Jerome Felton, his second touchdown of the game. But the Gamecocks stormed back as Clay Green returned the following kickoff 96-yards for a touchdown and then took the lead, 35-31, with 1:27 to play on a 2-yard run by Daniel Jackson.

The Paladins rushed for 302 yards as Brandon May ran for 79, Felton 74 and Cedrick Gipson 65, including a 31-yard touchdown run. Martin was 17-of-28 for 200 yards and two touchdowns.

Green was the leading rusher for the Gamecocks with 111 yards. Maurice Mullins was 7-of-14 for 96 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
