PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Joe Rubin rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown to lead Portland State to a 28-12 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday.

The Portland State defense added two big fumble returns -- including a touchdown -- while the offense struggled most of the night, picking up just 228 total yards.

Leading just 7-6 early in the third quarter, the Vikings got their first big break when Kenneth Mackins blocked a Sacramento State punt and recovered it at the Hornets' 25-yard line. Three plays later, Rubin carried for a two-yard touchdown to put Portland State ahead 14-6.

The Vikings pushed their lead to 21-6 late in the third quarter when defensive end Cole Smith picked up a fumble and returned it eight yards for a touchdown. Portland State added an insurance touchdown early in the fourth on a short run by fullback Allen Kennett.

The final TD was set up by Joey King's 95-yard fumble return. King was tackled from behind on the 1-yard line, although he appeared to have scored on the play.

A turnover also led to Sacramento State's last score. Safety Brent Webber's interception return to the Portland State 6 set up a short TD pass from Brad Tredway to McRuben Fleurinord, which cut the Vikings' lead to 28-12.

Running back Ryan Mole led the Hornets with 82 yards on 29 carries. Tredway added 117 yards for Sacramento State, which was held to 209 total yards. Portland State quarterback Sawyer Smith had an even tougher night, going 6-15 with two interceptions and only 55 yards.
