MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) -- Linebacker Mike Anderson returned an
interception 71 yards for a touchdown with 45 seconds to play and
secured Idaho's 27-13 win over Utah State, the Vandals' first in
the Western Athletic Conference.
Steven Wichman completed his first 13 passes and finished
20-for-25 for 238 yards and a touchdown for Idaho.
The Vandals (1-4, 1-1) also received a boost from Rolly Lumbala,
who finished with 73 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.
Quarterback Leon Jackson III rushed for 74 yards on 18 carries
and threw for 157 yards for Utah State (1-2, 0-1).
Idaho scored early when Lumbala inched his way across the goal
line on fourth down from the Utah State 1. After trading turnovers,
Idaho scored again late in the second quarter when Wichman hit
Lumbala in stride on the left flat from 12 yards out to give the
Vandals a 14-0 halftime lead.
Utah State answered in the third quarter, with a 10-yard pass
from Jackson to Kevin Robinson, and the Aggies scored again later
in the quarter following back-to-back Idaho turnovers inside Utah
State territory. Chris Forbes' 51-yard touchdown run brought the
Aggies within 14-13, but they missed the extra point.
Idaho built a seven-point lead with 46- and 29-yard field goals
from Mike Barrow in the fourth quarter. The Aggies were driving
when Anderson came up with his interception on a first-down play
from the Idaho 34.
