Brown 45, Rhode Island 35

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Nick Hartigan moved into second place on Brown's career rushing list with 252 yards in the Bears' 45-35 win over Rhode Island in the 90th meeting between the teams on Saturday.

Hartigan, who ran 31 times and scored four touchdowns, now has 3,223 career rushing yards, 43 shy of the school record set by Michael Malan from 1999 to 2001.

The 45 points were the most Brown (2-1) has scored against Rhode Island (3-2) since 1974 when the Bears defeated the Rams 45-15 in the annual Governor's Cup.

Quarterback Jayson Davis led Rhode Island by rushing for 152 yards and one touchdown and completing 13-of-22 passes for 160 yards and another score. Davis' 15-yard touchdown pass to Joe Casey pulled Rhode Island with 21-14 midway through the second quarter.

Brown increased its lead to 35-21 at halftime on touchdown runs of 12 and 10 yards by Hartigan.

Brown put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter when Jamie Gasperalla's second interception set up a 33-yard touchdown run by Hartigan with 5:41 left. Gasperalla's first interception early in the second quarter led to a 3-yard touchdown run by Max Tornatore and a 21-7 lead.

Calvin Poole scored twice for Rhode Island, on a 20-yard run in the first quarter and on a 6-yard run in the third quarter. Rod Chance also had a 16-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Rams.
