Powers tosses four TDs as Illini lose fourth straight

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana's Blake Powers threw four touchdown passes, while receiver James Hardy and running back Chris Taylor each topped 100 yards to lead the Hoosiers past Illinois 36-13 on Saturday.

The Hoosiers (4-1, 1-1) won their third straight home game, while the Fighting Illini (2-4, 0-3) have lost four in a row overall and 10 straight Big Ten road games.

Powers, a sophomore, was 22-of-35 for 198 yards and broke Antwaan Randle El's single-season school record of 17 TD passes late in the game. Powers has thrown 18 touchdowns in five games and also extended his school record to four straight games with at least three TD passes.

Hardy caught 10 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns, including the record-breaker with 4:04 left, while Taylor ran 18 times for 132 yards and one TD.

Illini quarterback Tim Brasic was 22-of-39 for 230 yards with one touchdown and rushed 13 times for 34 yards, but his miscues proved costly. An interception in the final minute of the first half led to one Indiana score, and his fumble early in the fourth period set up another Indiana score.

Illinois closed to 14-10 on Brasic's 3-yard TD pass to Melvin Bryant, but Indiana's Tracy Porter picked off Brasic's throw at the Illinois 36 with 51 seconds left in the half. Powers then threw a 7-yard pass to Hardy that made it 21-10 at the half.

The Illini trimmed the lead to 21-13 when Jason Reda hit a 52-yard field goal that bounced off the crossbar. They were driving again when Will Meyers hit Brasic, knocking the ball loose.

Indiana recovered at its 43, and Powers converted by finding Marcus Thigpen on an 18-yard pass that made it 28-13 with 9:33 left. Illinois never threatened again.
