BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) -- Backup quarterback Jake Phillips threw
for 256 yards and four touchdowns and ran for the game-winning
touchdown in the second overtime to lead William & Mary to a 44-41
victory over Northeastern on Saturday.
After William & Mary (4-2, 2-1 Atlantic 10) held Northeastern to
a field goal on its second overtime possession, Phillips scored on
a 9-yard run.
Phillips replaced Mike Potts with five minutes remaining in the
third quarter and completed 18 of 20 passes as William & Mary
erased a 21-point Northeastern lead in the fourth quarter to force
William & Mary pulled within a touchdown when Phillips found
Elliott Mack for a 22-yard score with 6:05 left.
Northeastern (1-5, 1-3) went three and out, and William & Mary
scored on a 28-yard pass from Phillips to Josh Lustig with 1:43 to
play to tie it.
Phillips threw a scoring pass to Joe Nicholas on William &
Mary's first overtime possession, but Northeastern countered with a
9-yard pass from Anthony Orio to Cory Parks.
Northeastern had a first-and-goal on the William & Mary 4-yard
line in the second overtime but had to settle for a field goal.
Lustig had 126 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Nicholas had
105 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
The Huskies were led by Maurice Murray with 176 yards and two
touchdowns rushing, and Orio who threw for 195 yards and two
Potts started at quarterback for William & Mary and completed 9
of 15 passes for 103 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
