HOUSTON (AP) -- DeAngelo Williams rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns, powering Memphis to a 35-20 come-from-behind win over Houston on Saturday.

Houston lost two fumbles in the end zone and missed a 21-yard field goal, all in the second half, helping Memphis (3-3 overall, 2-2 Conference USA) escape with the win.

The Cougars (3-3, 2-2) trailed 21-20 and were driving for the go-ahead score when tailback Ryan Gilbert fumbled into the end zone with 7:37 left in the fourth quarter.

LaVale Washington recovered for Memphis, and the Tigers marched 80 yards for the game-clinching touchdown with 2:37 remaining on a 1-yard run by quarterback Maurice Avery.

Williams, who carried 33 times, added a 25-yard scoring run with 1:55 remaining to boost the Tigers' lead to 35-20. Williams is now the No. 10 rusher in Division I history with 5,145 yards. Two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin is No. 9 at 5,177.

Houston had two opportunities to take the lead in the third quarter but squandered both. Cougars running back Jackie Battle fumbled out of the end zone with 8:56 left in the period, and kicker Ben Bell missed a 21-yard field goal five seconds before the period's end.

The game began well for the Cougars, who needed just two plays to cover 80 yards on the game's first possession. Quarterback Kevin Kolb completed a pass in the flat to slot receiver Vincent Marshall, who raced 79 yards before being hauled down at the Memphis 1-yard line.

From there, running back Battle powered into the end zone to give Houston the lead just 40 seconds into the game.

Memphis tied the score on the first play of the second quarter when Williams scored on a 35-yard run.

Just 22 seconds after the Tigers' score, Kolb connected with wide receiver Donnie Avery on a 63-yard touchdown pass, capping a three-play, 65-yard drive to give Houston a 14-7 lead.

Memphis answered almost immediately when Avery threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to receiver Ryan Scott to tie the score at 14 with 13:32 left in the second quarter.

The Tigers took the lead for good with 9:11 left in the first half on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Avery to Scott.
