BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Cortland Finnegan returned a punt 75
yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter to lift Samford to
a 27-23 victory over Murray State Saturday.
Neither team scored after Finnegan's return with 22 seconds left
in the third for the Bulldogs (3-4, 2-2 Ohio Valley Conference).
Murray State (1-5, 0-3) outgained Samford 464-243 in total
yards, but couldn't reach the end zone in the second half. The
Bulldogs also scored on Quinton Smith's 44-yard fumble recovery in
the first quarter.
Murray State had to settle for three field goals by Rod Crass in
the second and third quarters, the longest 36 yards.
Shannon Fleming kicked a 44-yard field goal and a 32-yarder for
Jefferson Adcock passed for only 114 yards but had a 21-yard
touchdown pass to Josh Brennard with 5:14 left in the first quarter
as Samford built a 17-7 lead.
