SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Sophomore running back Josh Barnett carried 25 times for 122 yards and one touchdown as Idaho State beat Sacramento State 27-17 on Saturday night.

The Bengals defense recovered five Sacramento State fumbles, as they recorded their first win in five meetings at Hornet Stadium.

Quarterback Chris Hurd threw 13-for-33 for 150 yards and one touchdown for the Hornets (2-6, 1-3 Big Sky Conference).

After Idaho State defensive back Quinton Freeman recovered a Ryan Mole fumble on the Hornets 18 during the kickoff, Jaret Johnson kicked a 34-yard field goal to opening the scoring for the Bengals (4-3, 2-2).

Sacramento State kicker Juan Gamboa tied the game with a 24-yard field goal on the Hornets' next possession.

On an option play, the Bengals regained the lead after Eddie Thompson gained nine yards running before flipping the football to Josh Barnett who ran in for a 20-yard TD. Quarterback Luke Sniewski then threw a 15-yard pass to receiver Shedrack Okoebor for another score.

Sacramento State had four turnovers -- three fumbles and one interception -- in the first quarter. Neither team got near the end zone in the second quarter as the Idaho State led 17-3 at the half.

The Hornets got on the board early in the third when Hurd tossed a 4-yard pass to McRuben Fleurinord.

Sacramento State was moving the ball well on their next possession until Idaho State cornerback Anthony Melvin recovered a fumble by Hurd and ran 53 yards. The Bengals added a 28-yard field goal by Johnson.

The Hornets made the final score of the game early in the fourth when defensive back Brandon Smith picked off Sniewski and returned it for a 55-yard TD, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
