WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -- Curtis Painter passed for 261 yards
and two touchdowns and ran for two scores as Purdue beat Indiana
State 60-35 on Saturday.
It was the second time in coach Joe Tiller's 10 years at Purdue
that the Boilermakers scored 60 or more points.
The Boilermakers (1-0) led the Division I-AA Sycamores 26-21 at
halftime, but blew the game open after the break. Purdue gained 156
of its 190 rushing yards in the second half.
Indiana State started the third quarter with a chance to take
the lead. Purdue stopped the Sycamores, then went 77 yards in 10
plays. Painter scored on a 3-yard run for a 33-21 lead with 8:41
left in the third quarter.
West scored three minutes later on a 42-yard run that cut
Purdue's lead to 33-28, but Sheets quickly answered with a 1-yard
score with 3:07 left in the third quarter that bumped the lead to
Sheets scored his third touchdown, a 7-yard run with 13:12 left
in the game, to give Purdue a 46-28.
Purdue scored on its first possession. Sheets returned the
opening kickoff 56 yards, then finished the drive with a 5-yard
Indiana State committed three penalties on its first possession
and was backed up to the 2-yard line. Purdue cornerback Aaron Lane
then read a screen pass and tackled West in the end zone for a
Painter fired a 41-yard touchdown pass to Bryant with 11 seconds
left in the first quarter to give the Boilermakers a 23-7 lead.
Bryant later scored on a 53-yard pass from Painter.
Purdue's increased its lead to 26-7 before Indiana State's Donye
McCleskey blocked a Purdue punt, recovered it and scored a
