SACRAMENTO (AP) -- Matt Brennan threw for 258 yards and two
touchdowns as third-rank Cal Poly barely defeated host Sacramento
State 17-10 on Saturday night.
Ramses Barden caught nine passes for 200 yards and two
touchdowns for the Mustangs (3-0), who have won seven straight
regular-season games dating back to last season.
Kris Daniels carried 20 times for 54 yards and one touchdown for
the Hornets (0-2), who have lost four consecutive games to the
Cal Poly scored on its first offensive play of the game when
Brennan hit Barden for a 59-yard TD pass in the first quarter. The
Mustangs gave up their first points of the season after Juan Gamboa
kicked a 34-yard field goal in the second quarter for the Hornets.
Without throwing a pass, Sacramento State controlled the ball on
offense for nearly 18 minutes in the first half.
Nick Coromelas kicked a 26-yard field goal with 10:33 left in
the third period to put the Mustangs up 10-3. Brennan and Barden
hooked up again for a 17-yard TD to start the fourth quarter.
After Brennan fumbled the ball on the Hornets' 1-yard line, the
quarterback had to chase linebacker Tyson Butler, who recovered the
miscue, 79 yards down to the Mustangs' 17-yard line. Daniels scored
on a 10-yard run four plays later for the final score.
