UTEP 44, New Mexico State 38

EL PASO, Texas (AP) -- Emeri Spence's late-game interception secured a 44-38 win for Texas-El Paso over rival New Mexico State on Saturday night.

The Miners (2-2) beat the Aggies (2-2) in a game in which the Miners dominated early. It ended in an old-fashioned shootout.

The Miners, led by quarterback Jordan Palmer, scored on three of their last four possessions to hold onto a lead that had been as wide as 17 points in the first half. The Aggies, with the nation's top passing offense, at one point tied it in the third quarter.

Palmer threw for 414 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions in a strong offensive showing.

Aggies quarterback Chase Holbrook threw for four touchdowns and 506 yards. He completed 48-of-78 attempts, a Sun Bowl record for a UTEP game.

The Miners had a 21-yard touchdown run by Marcus Thomas on UTEP's first possession -- the first time all season the Miners put points on the board in the first quarter. And they kept up the pace, adding points in five of their seven first-half possessions.
