Arizona State 38, Stanford 3

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Ryan Torain ran for 90 yards and a touchdown
and caught a touchdown pass to help Arizona State snap a three-game
losing streak with a 38-3 victory over Stanford on Saturday.

Keegan Herring added two touchdown runs as the Sun Devils (4-3,
1-3) handed Stanford (0-8, 0-5) its 10th straight loss, a streak
dating to last season.

The Sun Devils limited Stanford to 145 total yards.

Arizona State's Zach Miller caught four passes to break Todd
Heap's school record for receptions by a tight end. Miller, a
junior, has 119 career catches.

The Sun Devils typically like to pass. But Arizona State stuck
to the ground against Stanford, which came into the game allowing a
national-worst 262.6 yards per game. The Sun Devils rushed for 206
yards.

Torain, a junior college transfer from Shawnee Mission, Kan.,
emerged from a crowded backfield to take over the starting job
three weeks ago.

Torain caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Rudy Carpenter to
give the Sun Devils a 7-0 lead on the game's first possession. The
pass capped an eight-play, 59-yard drive.

Torain's 2-yard run gave Arizona State a 17-0 lead midway
through the second quarter.

Torain gave way to Herring, who scored on runs of 8 and 6 yards
to put the Sun Devils ahead 31-0 with 6:20 to play in the third
quarter.

Carpenter completed 14 of 15 passes for 160 yards and a
touchdown. He completed 12 straight passes at one point, one shy of
the school record.

The Cardinal's yearlong offensive woes continued. Stanford had
62 yards of total offense before tailback Anthony Kimble ran for 58
yards midway through the third quarter.

The Cardinal have scored nine touchdowns in eight games -- and
five came in a 35-34 loss to San Jose State on Sept. 9.

Stanford's only points came on Aaron Zagory's 35-yard field goal
with 3:53 to play in the third quarter.

T.C. Ostrander made his first start of the season at quarterback
for the Cardinal. Ostrander, a senior, replaced Trent Edwards, who
broke his foot last week and is out for the season.

Ostrander was 7-for-25 for 66 yards. He threw one interception.
