East Carolina 20, Southern Miss 17 (OT)

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Ben Hartman kicked a 24-yard field goal in overtime to lift East Carolina to a 20-17 win over Southern Mississippi on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles (4-4, 2-2 Conference USA) were ahead 17-10 when East Carolina quarterback James Pickney scored on a 1-yard yard run with 13 seconds to play in regulation. The score tied the game at 17-all as the clock expired.

The game-winning field goal came after Southern Miss quarterback Jeremy Young was intercepted in the end zone by Travis Williams on the first play of overtime. East Carolina (4-4, 3-2) was able to drive the ball into field goal range and capitalize on the turnover.

Both teams had big plays in the game, including the interception that Eddie Hicks returned 87 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, giving the Golden Eagles a 17-10 lead. The interception return broke a 51-year-old school record and stopped a long Pirate march toward the end zone.

The teams were tied 10-10 at halftime, thanks in part to a 96-yard kickoff return by East Carolina's Chris Johnson.

Southern's first score came on a 9-yard pass from Young to Ed Morgan in the second quarter.

The teams also traded field goals with Southern Miss' Darren McCaleb hitting a 43-yarder and Hartman scoring from 47-yards.
