HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Ben Hartman kicked a 24-yard field
goal in overtime to lift East Carolina to a 20-17 win over Southern
Mississippi on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles (4-4, 2-2 Conference USA) were ahead 17-10
when East Carolina quarterback James Pickney scored on a 1-yard
yard run with 13 seconds to play in regulation. The score tied the
game at 17-all as the clock expired.
The game-winning field goal came after Southern Miss quarterback
Jeremy Young was intercepted in the end zone by Travis Williams on
the first play of overtime. East Carolina (4-4, 3-2) was able to

that Eddie Hicks returned 87 yards for a touchdown in the third
quarter, giving the Golden Eagles a 17-10 lead. The interception
return broke a 51-year-old school record and stopped a long Pirate
march toward the end zone.
The teams were tied 10-10 at halftime, thanks in part to a
96-yard kickoff return by East Carolina's Chris Johnson.
Southern's first score came on a 9-yard pass from Young to Ed
Morgan in the second quarter.
The teams also traded field goals with Southern Miss' Darren
McCaleb hitting a 43-yarder and Hartman scoring from 47-yards.
