HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Quarterback Derek Cassidy rushed for a touchdown and threw for another to lead Rhode Island to a 20-13 victory Saturday that extended Hofstra's losing streak to five games.
Cassidy completed 7 of 12 passes for 170 yards for Rhode Island (4-5, 2-4 Atlantic 10), which scored all three of its touchdowns in the first quarter. Shaw Leonard was the leading receiver for Rhode Island with four catches for 120 yards.
Cassidy scored on a 1-yard run just after the midpoint of the first. Jimmy Hughes followed about four minutes later with a 6-yard scoring run, then Cassidy threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Tolbert Evans to give Rhode Island a 20-0 lead with almost five minutes left in the quarter.
The Pride (2-7, 1-5) scored on a 2-yard run by Terry Crenshaw midway through the second. Rob Zarilli added a pair of 32-yard field goals, the first just before the half and the second midway through the third.
