LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) -- Casey Fitzgerald scored on a 36-yard pass to break open a tie game as North Texas defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 16-7 Saturday.
Fitzgerald's score with 4:49 left in the third quarter gave the Mean Green (3-7, 2-3 Sun Belt Conference) a 14-7 lead. A little over three minutes later a high snap on a punt resulted in a safety for North Texas.
The Ragin' Cajuns (4-5, 1-3) managed only 208 yards of total offense, 93 of which came on UL's only scoring drive. Louisiana-Lafayette also surrendered nine points because of special teams miscues.
Louisiana-Lafayette tied the score on Derrick Smith's 2-yard TD catch as time expired before halftime.
Fitzgerald's score with 4:59 left in the third quarter capped an 11-play, 86-yard drive.
