LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) -- Casey Fitzgerald scored on a 36-yard pass to break open a tie game as North Texas defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 16-7 Saturday.
Fitzgerald's score with 4:49 left in the third quarter gave the Mean Green (3-7, 2-3 Sun Belt Conference) a 14-7 lead. A little over three minutes later a high snap on a punt resulted in a safety for North Texas.
The Ragin' Cajuns (4-5, 1-3) managed only 208 yards of total offense, 93 of which came on UL's only scoring drive. Louisiana-Lafayette also surrendered nine points because of special teams miscues.
After a scoreless first quarter, North Texas opened the second quarter with a 4-yard TD pass to Johnny Quinn from Daniel Meager, who completed 4-of-7 passes for 37 yards.
Louisiana-Lafayette tied the score on Derrick Smith's 2-yard TD catch as time expired before halftime.
Fitzgerald's score with 4:59 left in the third quarter capped an 11-play, 86-yard drive.
Matt Phillips completed 5-of-9 passes for 91 yards and one interception for the Mean Green. Deavin Cox added 98 rushing yards on 28 carries while Fitzgerald had 91 yards on two catches.
Jerry Babb completed 17-fo-27 passes for 168 yards for the Ragin' Cajuns while Tyrell Fenroy led on the ground with 60 yards on 15 carries and Smith added 102 yards on seven catches.
