HONOLULU (AP) -- Colt Brennan is making winning look easy and doing his best to earn Hawaii some national recognition.
Brennan passed for 402 yards and five touchdowns as Hawaii rolled to its eighth straight victory by beating San Jose State 54-17 on Saturday night.
"This team is about winning this year," Brennan said. "We've always been able to put up nice stats, but when you have victories behind it, it says a lot more."
Nate Ilaoa returned from an ankle injury and had 100 yards rushing and 66 yards receiving for the Warriors (9-2, 7-1 Western Athletic Conference) who kept alive their hopes for a WAC title. Hawaii needs No. 13 Boise State to lose next week to Nevada for a share of the conference championship.
Hawaii racked up 568 yards of offense while holding San Jose State to 192.
"We got our butts kicked," Spartans coach Dick Tomey said. "These kind of games are very disheartening. They outplayed and outcoached us."
The Spartans (6-4, 3-3) kept it competitive until the Brennan broke the game open in the second half with four straight touchdown passes.
Brennan, who also had a rushing touchdown, completed 28-of-39 passes and had one interception. He has thrown for 4,155 yards and 48 TDs this season. He is just six touchdowns shy of tying the NCAA season mark of 54 held by Houston's David Klingler in 1990.
Besides Hawaii's top-ranked offense, its defense also stepped up big.
Hawaii forced turnovers, recorded five sacks and held running back Yonus Davis to a season-low 29 yards on 14 carries. He entered the game averaging 101.3 yards a game and more than 7 yards a carry.
Spartans quarterback Adam Tafralis was under heavy pressure all night. He was 7-of-15 for 110 yards. He fumbled twice in the fourth quarter.
"We are trying to finish the season with a smile on our face and we don't have one tonight," Tomey said. "Their guys whipped our guys."
Brennan's 5- and 10-yard TD passes to Davone Bess were the first of Hawaii's four unanswered TDs and gave Hawaii a 34-17 lead.
"We had a lot of dropped ball, but Colt hung in there," Hawaii coach June Jones said.
Bess finished with six catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns for the Hawaii Bowl-bound Warriors.
Despite only 67 yards of offensive in the first half, the Spartans managed to cut the lead to 10 just before halftime on Jared Strubeck's 37-yard field goal.
Hawaii committed several costly penalties in the half, including an offensive pass interference call that negated a touchdown. Hawaii also had a turnover that led to a 1-yard scoring run by James T. Callier.
Myron Newberry mishandled a bouncing punt, giving the Spartans possession on Hawaii's 5. Callier's score cut Hawaii's lead to 13-7.
The Warriors came right back, with Brennan scrambling and scoring on an 8-yard run up the middle. The touchdown capped an eight-play, 93-yard drive and gave Hawaii 507 points on the season, breaking the school record of 502 points set in 2002.
The Warriors were flagged 12 times for 140 yards while the Spartans committed three penalties for 35 yards.
