AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Ryan Cubit threw for 217 yards and a touchdown to lead Western Michigan to a 17-0 win over Akron on Friday night.

The win will likely help the Broncos (8-4, 6-2 Mid-American Conference) secure a bowl invitation for the first time since 1988, when they fell to Fresno State in the California Bowl.

Cubit was 17-of-29 with one interception and threw a 16-yard scoring pass to Keith Schultz in the third quarter. Brandon West scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth for the Broncos, and Jamarko Simmons had eight catches for 98 yards.

Luke Getsy completed 13 of 26 passes for 132 yards for Akron (5-7, 3-5). He threw one interception and was sacked five times. Getsy finished with minus-33 yards rushing, and the Broncos held the Zips to 119 total yards.

Western Michigan led 3-0 at halftime on Nate Meyer's 38-yard field goal.
