CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Senior quarterback Duran Lawson threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns to lead The Citadel to a 35-14 win against crosstown rival Charleston Southern in the season opener for both teams Saturday.
Lawson went 21 for 32 in the air and ran 15 times for another 54 yards.
Senior Tory Cooper had 122 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns and sophomore Andre Roberts had nine catches for 108 yards and a score for the Bulldogs (1-0). Cooper also had three kick returns for 83 yards.
The Buccaneers (0-1) gained just 24 yards on the ground and had 161 total yards on offense.
The Bulldogs took over in the second quarter, scoring on a 26-yard pass to Roberts from Lawson and a 4-yard run by Cooper to put The Citadel up 21-7 at the half.
The Buccaneers started the second-half scoring as Byrd picked up 17 of his 28 yards on a touchdown run with 11:45 left in the third to pull to 21-14. Byrd went 11 of 27 for 137 yards, one TD throw and one interception. He also was the Bucs leading rusher.
