PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) -- Alex Brink threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns as Washington State beat Idaho 45-28 in the 90th Battle of the Palouse on Saturday.
Michael Bumpus caught eight passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns as Washington State (2-1) won its seventh straight in the series between schools located just 8 miles apart.
Idaho (1-2) led in the early going, but the Cougars of the Pacific-10 pulled away late in the second quarter to take a 31-21 lead at halftime and extended that in the second half.
Longtime Washington State assistant Robb Akey is in his first year as coach of Idaho, of the Western Athletic Conference.
Washington State leads the series, which goes on indefinite hiatus after this season, 70-17-3.
Brink, a senior, completed 26 of 36 passes and was intercepted once. Last week he completed a school record 38 passes in a win over San Diego State. The four-year starter became the career leader in pass completions at WSU with 624, passing Jason Gesser's 611.
Dwight Tardy rushed 22 times for 108 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars.
Idaho freshman quarterback Nathan Enderle threw for three touchdowns, but was intercepted four times.
On the game's first series, Enderle hit Max Komar for a 38-yard touchdown pass. Washington State tied the game when Brink hit a leaping Brandon Gibson in the end zone from 21 yards out.
Idaho replied with a 66-yard scoring drive. On fourth-and-1 from the 9, Enderle's pass into the end zone produced a tug-of-war between receiver Maurice Shaw and defender Husain Abdullah, with both going out of bounds while battling for the ball. After a video review, officials ruled a touchdown for Idaho and a 14-7 lead.
Brink immediately took the Cougars 80 yards, aided by two pass interference calls and a late hit penalty against the Vandals, with Bumpus scoring on a 4-yard pass to tie the game at 14.
On Idaho's next possession, Abdullah intercepted Enderle near midfield and returned the ball to Idaho's 14. Tardy's 4-yard run gave WSU a 21-14 lead.
After Stanley Franks' interception gave Idaho the ball at WSU's 48, Enderle hit Komar on a 24-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 21.
Brink's 15-yard touchdown pass to Bumpus gave WSU a 28-21 lead with 4:03 left in the half.
Devin Giles intercepted Enderle on the next play to give WSU the ball on Idaho's 33, but the Cougars had to settle for a field goal and a 31-21 halftime lead.
Tardy's 3-yard run lifted WSU to a 38-21 lead late in the third.
The Vandals replied with a 78-yard drive, capped by Enderle's 1-yard keeper, to close to within 38-28 after three quarters.
But Enderle threw his third interception on the next series, and the Cougars scored on Brink's 10-yard pass to Charles Dillon for a 45-28 lead.
