DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Corey Lewis rushed for 108 yards and Darian Williams added 80 yards and a touchdown to lead Northern Iowa past Drake 45-7.
Northern Iowa, which won at Iowa State two weeks ago, is now 4-0. It's the first time the Panthers have opened the season with four straight wins since 1999.
The Panthers dispelled any notions of an upset by jumping out to a 28-0 lead late in the second quarter.
Northern Iowa went 73 yards on its opening drive, capped by a 2-yard TD run from Eric Sanders that put the Panthers up 7-0. They caught a break later in the first quarter, as Drake's Greg Smit lost control of the ball while fighting to reach the first-down marker. Araf Evans scooped up the fumble and went 35 yards to give Northern Iowa a 14-0 lead.
The Panthers went ahead 21-0 on a 21-yard TD run by Williams early in the second quarter. Drake's Derek Retherford then threw an interception, and a facemask penalty on the return put Northern Iowa on the Bulldogs 11. Sanders hooked up with Johnny Gray for a touchdown pass that made it 28-0 with 4:18 in the first half.
Drake (3-1) finally got on the board with a 15-yard TD reception by Zach Brower near the end of the opening half. But Northern Iowa put together a pair of long scoring drives in the third quarter, pushing its lead to 38-7 on a 1-yard TD run by Derrick Law.
Sanders was 11-of-14 passing for 167 yards in three quarters of work.
The Panthers, ranked No. 4 in The Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision poll, have outscored Drake 145-31 since the series resumed in 2005 after a 20-year hiatus.
Drake's Scott Phaydavong, who came in averaging 144 yards rushing per game, was held to just 29 yards on 13 carries.
