SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Freshman quarterback Jason Smith threw for 233 yards, tossed two touchdown passes and ran two yards for another score to lead Sacramento State over Northern Arizona 38-9 on Saturday.

Running back Bryan Hilliard ran for 100 yards and a score, and receiver Ryan Coogler caught three passes for 95 yards and a TD for Sac State (1-3, 1-1 Big Sky).

Marshall Sperbeck earned his first career victory as Sacramento State's head coach.

Alex Watson had two catches for 45 yards and a touchdown for NAU (2-3, 1-1 Big Sky).

Coogler caught a 14 yard pass from Jason Smith and ran it 60 yards for a touchdown to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead in the second quarter.

The Hornets ended the first half leading 17-3 after a 40-yard field goal by Juan Gamboa and a 60-yard interception return by linebacker Cyrus Mulitalo.

Including Smith's 2-yard TD run and a 19-yard scoring pass to Dylan Lane in the third period, Sac State went on to out score the Lumberjacks 21-6 in the second half.

The Hornets snapped NAU's place kicker Robbie Dehaze string of 42 extra points with a block late in the third quarter.

The Lumberjacks (17) and Hornets (21) combined for 38 offensive plays without producing any points in the first quarter.Both teams finished the game with a total of 114 offensive plays (Sac State 78, NAU 56).
