BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) -- Brandon Jackson scored on an 11-yard run with 3:09 left to break a tie and give Gardner-Webb a 20-13 victory over Austin Peay Saturday night.
Gardner-Webb (2-2) made the lead stand up thanks to freshman Jeffrey Williams' stop at the line of scrimmage on a key third down.
Austin Peay (3-2) later got a 50-yard pass play on a tipped ball to move to the Bulldog 5-yard line with less than a minute left. But Quantavis Jackson prevented the potential tying score with a diving tackle.
The Governors recovered a fumble in its own backfield, but threw three incompletions and ended its threat.
Duvaughn Flagler caught 11 passes for 153 yards and a 19-yard touchdown catch with 14:24 remaining to help the Governors tie the score at 13.
Chris Fletcher, a preseason All-America for Austin Peay, had his streak of 10-straight games with 100 yards or more rushing snapped. Fletcher finished with 73 yards on 24 carries.
Gardner Webb's defense held the Governors to just 93 yards rushing on 39 carries. Austin Peay came into the game averaging 210 yards per game.
