CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (AP) -- Quarterback Kyle Hughes ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns -- and threw for two more -- as VMI rushed for more 443 yards in beating Robert Morris 40-13 on Saturday.
Hughes averaged 10.5 yards a carry for VMI (2-3), thanks largely to a 71-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and was one of three VMI players to run for at least 100 yards. Howard Abegesah carried 27 times for a game-high 157 yards while Joey Robinson rushed 7 times for 100.
Robert Morris (3-2) managed just two first-half field goals by Michael Walser and trailed 20-6.
Robert Morris threatened to make a game of it after recovering Tim Maypray's fumble on VMI's second possession of the second half. Erik Cwalinski hit Alvin Hill with a 38-yard touchdown pass three plays later to make it 20-13, but VMI's ball-control offense proved too much for the Colonials.
Hughes hit Brian Barnson with a 32-yard scoring pass to cap a 9-play, 80-yard drive late in the third quarter. VMI then scored on Maypray's 2-yard ending a 10-play, 80-yard drive that opened the fourth quarter, to make the score 33-13.
Robinson scored on a 6-yard run to round out the scoring with less than two minutes remaining after Robert Morris lost a fumble deep in its own territory.
Hughes completed 3 of 6 passes for 108 yards, including a 49-yard pass to Brian Barnson for the game's first score.
Cwalinski completed just 14 of 37 passes, including 5 for 85 yards to Hill. Myles Russ led Robert Morris with 97 yards rushing on 14 attempts.
