Hughes Stadium (CO), Fort Collins, CO
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) -- Not even lightning can stop the Air Force offense.
Hall, a senior, ran for a school record 256 yards on 31 carries and scored four touchdowns. It was his third 100-yard rushing performance against the Rams, and his fifth overall.
The game was delayed 45 minutes because lightning knocked out power to some parts of the stadium. Many fans drove away before the game started and many more chose not to brave the rain and strong winds, leaving at halftime.
Carney completed only one pass in the first half, but the 12-yard completion to Hall was enough to set the school record for passing yards. Dave Ziebart, who played from 1976-79, had 4,789 yards. Carney finished the game with 52 yards passing and a touchdown.
Hall said he didn't know about the record until after he got it. Carney didn't even know about his until after the game.
"Oh?" Carney said after being told about the record. "I didn't even know. I think when I'm 30 or 40 years old I'll look back and say that's pretty neat. For now, I just want to get to a bowl game and get this team back to the top of the Mountain West Conference."
The passing record was appropriately set on a night when Carney only attempted five passes. He got the mark when he connected with Hall.
The Falcons (5-2, 4-1) forced Rams' quarterback Caleb Hanie into three first-half interceptions and the Falcons capitalized, returning one for a touchdown and turning another into a scoring drive.
"I feel like the unluckiest quarterback playing on the most unlucky team," Hanie said. "They get interceptions when a receiver runs the wrong route and get one on a deflection. And then we can't finish a drive when we get down close."
Colorado State (0-6, 0-3) continued to struggle as its losing streak reached 13 games.
Air Force was the first team to beat CSU during its current tailspin, erasing an 18-point halftime deficit last year to beat the Rams 24-21. The Rams' last win was more than a year ago, when they beat UNLV 28-7 last Oct. 7.
Colorado State cut the lead to seven in the second quarter on a touchdown run by Gartrell Johnson.
It was the closest it would get as Air Force dominated the time of possession battle by nearly 10 minutes.
"Our problem was getting their offense off the field which we couldn't do," Colorado State coach Sonny Lubick said. "Not only did they keep the ball, but they also scored points. We saw from tape they would run the football and be hard to control. They kept the ball all day on us."
Air Force coach Troy Calhoun didn't come into the game expecting to run the ball 69 times. It just kind of worked out that way because of the weather.
"You look at the way that flag was going, I thought it was going to be a little bit difficult to throw into it," Calhoun said. "You just have to be resourceful. You've got to find different ways to win."
That's where Hall came in.
Hall was the team's leading rusher last year while playing running back. He was moved to wide receiver when Calhoun arrived this season, but he still leads the Falcons in rushing yards.
Calhoun nearly didn't leave his best player in to get the record, though.
"My initial thought was 'So What?" Calhoun said. "Then I thought "No, this could be a pretty special opportunity for the kid."
Dee Dowis had the record. He ran for 249 yards in 1989 against San Diego State.
Now that Hall has the mark, what does that mean at such a runner-friendly school?
"I think you should put him up for the Heisman," Carney said. "He's dynamite."
