NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Hampton kicker Carlo Turavani had an extra-point attempt blocked with 27 seconds left in the game and he missed a 49-yard field goal with two seconds remaining, giving Norfolk State a 20-19 win over the Pirates on Saturday.
Daryl Jones rushed for 99 yards, including a pair of 1-yard TD runs in the third and fourth quarters to put Norfolk State (5-1, 4-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) ahead 20-10.
Turavani kicked a 31-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter. Hampton's T.J. Mitchell, who threw a 10-yard TD pass in the first quarter to Jeremy Gilchrist, then scored on a 16-yard TD run with 27 seconds left in the game. But Norfolk State's Don Carey blocked Turavani's extra-point attempt that would have tied the score.
Hampton (4-2, 3-2) then recovered the ensuing onside kick and Mitchell hit Justin Brown with a 24-yard pass to the Norfolk State 32. After two incompletions, Turavani missed a 49-yard field goal try, sending Hampton to its first loss to Norfolk State since 2001.
Mitchell completed 23-of-48 passes for 277 yards. Hampton outgained Norfolk State 359-294 but was penalized 13 times for 112 yards.
