DALLAS (AP) -- Matt Forte scored on a 9-yard run in overtime and finished with a Conference USA record 342 yards on 38 attempts to lead Tulane to a 41-34 victory over Southern Methodist in overtime on Saturday night.

After Forte scored his fourth touchdown of the game, the Green Wave defense sealed the win when Reggie Scott forced a fumble by SMU quarterback Justin Willis on the Mustangs' first offensive play of overtime. Avery Williams recovered.

SMU forced OT when Willis threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Zach Sledge with 8 seconds left in the game. Willis completed 28 of 36 passes for 354 yards and three touchdowns.

Forte gave Tulane (2-5, 1-2 C-USA) a 34-27 lead when he scored on a 5-yard run around the left side with 4:38 left.

Forte set the conference record in regulation, finishing with 327 yards. Forte?s previous career-high came earlier this year when he ran for 303 yards against Southeastern Louisiana.

Forte entered Saturday?s game second in the NCAA in rushing yards with 919.

The Green Wave snapped a string of eight straight road losses in conference play.

The Mustangs (1-6, 0-3) have lost five games in a row.
