NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP) -- Andrew Ireland's second field goal of the game, a 28-yarder as time ran out, gave Texas State a 20-17 victory over Northwestern State Saturday.
On fourth-and-7 at their own 44 with 51 seconds remaining in the tie game, the Bobcats faked a punt to get close enough for the field goal. Ireland's kick sailed through the uprights with 1.9 seconds left in the game.
It was the third straight victory for Texas State (3-5, 2-2 Southland Conference).
Northwestern (3-5, 2-3) lost for the first time at home this season despite rushing for 300 yards. Byron Lawrence ran for 176 yards on 26 carries. Germayne Edmond passed for 90 yards, but had two interceptions, one at the goal line midway through the fourth quarter as the Demons missed a chance to snap a 17-all tie.
Edmond also rushed for 91 yards and touchdowns of 6- and 5-yards.
Bradley George completed 21 of 33 passes for 214 and two touchdowns for Texas State. George found a wide open Morris Crosby for 21-yard touchdown in the first quarter to put the Bobcats up 10-0. The pair hooked up for a 15-yard TD in the third quarter.
