NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Duke Calhoun caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Martin Hankins with 36 seconds remaining in the game to give Memphis a 28-27 victory over Tulane on Saturday.

The Tigers (4-4, 3-1 Conference USA) rallied to win despite Green Wave running back Matt Forte having his fourth consecutive 200-yard rushing game. He carried a school-record 44 times for 278 yards and two touchdowns.

Forte broke the school record for rushing yards in a season, surpassing the 1,421 that current Minnesota Vikings running back Mewelde Moore gained in 2001, finishing the day with 1,539 for the season.

Only three running backs in NCAA history have had five consecutive 200-yard rushing games Marcus Allen of USC (1981), Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State (1988) and Jamario Thomas of North Texas (2004).

Tulane (2-6, 1-3) missed an opportunity to increase a 27-21 lead when Ross Thevenot was wide right on a 22-yard field goal with 5:07 left in the game. The Tigers took over and drove 80 yards in nine plays to the winning score.

With time running out, Tulane drove to a first down at the Memphis 49 when Gabe Ratcliff caught a 4-yard pass and ran to the sideline. He was knocked out of bounds as he reached the sideline with 17 seconds left.

The officials stopped the clock temporarily for the first down, but the Green Wave thought it was stopped because Ratcliff went out of bounds. The clock started running while the Green Wave was lining up and quarterback Anthony Scelfo scrambled for five yards as time expired with Tulane still having one time-out.
