SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Matt Engle threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns to lead UC Davis over Sacramento State 31-26 on Saturday.

Bakari Grant caught eight passes for 116 yards and one touchdown, and linebackers Chris Buck and Mike Morales recorded 11 total tackles each for the Aggies (4-6), who have beaten the Hornets eight straight times.

UC Davis receiver Sean Creadick caught a 59-yard pass from Matt Engle to get to the Hornets' 5-yard line, but Sac State's defensive linemen James Henderson and Blaine Jackson stopped running back Brandon Tucker from getting into the end zone on a 4th-and-1.

Right after Sac State's big defensive play, UC Davis' defensive end James Amos sacked running back Bryan Hilliard in the end zone for a safety.

Three offensive plays later, the Aggies' Grant caught a 34-yard touchdown to give UC Davis a 9-0 lead with 9:58 left in the half.

When the Hornets were driving deep into Aggies territory, UC Davis cornerback Adam Cook intercepted a Jason Smith pass, and then returned it 87 yards for a TD.

Sac State trailed 16-3 at halftime after Juan Gamboa kicked a 21-yard field goal with 23 seconds left.

In the third quarter Sac State's Hilliard had two 29-yard touchdown runs that put the Hornets within seven points. The Aggies led 31-24 after three quarters.

Sac State got two points closer after declining a penalty and accepting a safety when the Aggies illegally kicked a punt out of bounds.

On key possessions late in the fourth quarter, the Aggies' defense sealed the victory when Smith threw two interceptions, one to freshman linebacker Dozie Amajoyi and the other to sophomore Kymm Snowden.

Hilliard rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns and Smith threw for 266 yards, 1 TD, and three costly interceptions for the Hornets (1-8).
