LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- Brock Smith threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth score to lead Liberty to a 73-34 win over VMI on Saturday.
The 73 points scored fell just short of the Liberty record of 76 set against West Virginia Tech in 1995.
Rashad Jennings ran for three TDs for the Flames (7-3, 3-0 Big South). Smith completed 11-of-14 passes for 246 yards, including first-half TD tosses of 6, 52 and 14 yards. He also had a 9-yard scoring run in the first quarter.
Liberty jumped ahead 24-0 before VMI cut the deficit to 45-28 at halftime. Liberty put the game away with 28 unanswered points in the second half, including TD runs of 4 and 6 yards by Jennings.
Liberty's Dominic Bolden, who had a TD catch, scored on an 83-yard kickoff return and teammate Jonathan Crawford had a 65-yard punt return for a score.
VMI's Howard Abegesah led all rushers with 120 yards. Abegesah, Joey Robinson and Tim Maypray ran for one score apiece for VMI (2-8, 0-4). Maypray also caught a 33-yard TD pass from Kyle Hughes and Bryant Youngblood scored on an 87-yard fumble return for VMI.
