COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Lee Sweeney threw for 199 yards and accounted for two touchdowns to help Tennessee Tech beat Gardner-Webb 28-12 on Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles (1-0) jumped out to a 22-3 lead with 2:51 left in the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown by Sweeney, who completed 19-of-31 passes and threw an interception.

Tim Benford caught five passes for 99 yards and a touchdown for Tennessee Tech. Henry Sailes had 78 yards on 10 catches.

Stan Doolittle, who was sacked four times, passed for 235 yards for the Runnin' Bulldogs (0-1).
