HOUSTON -- Paul Roberts threw for 413 yards and five touchdowns to lead Mississippi Valley State to a 58-44 win against Texas Southern on Saturday.
The Delta Devils (3-6, 1-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference) fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter before DeKoven Burrell intercepted a Texas Southern pass and returned it 84 yards for a touchdown.
Texas Southern (4-6, 1-4 SWAC) answered the pick with a four-yard run by Marcus Wright to go back up 14-7 with about three minutes to go in the first quarter.
The two teams traded touchdowns early in the second quarter before the Delta Devils scored on a two-yard pass from Roberts and another interception and 37-yard return for a touchdown by J.R. Purnell. Mississippi Valley State led 28-21 at the half.
Texas Southern scored midway through the third quarter to make the score 28-27, but failed to tie the game on the following extra point attempt.
The two teams traded scores again, including a 2-point safety by Mississippi Valley State and one touchdown apiece for both schools. They ended the third quarter with the Panthers trailing, 37-34.
The Delta Devils kept the scoring going in the fourth with two more touchdown passes from Roberts and a 10-yard run from Stephen Roberts. Cornelius Harmon threw for 464 yards and completed 28-of-55 passes and four touchdowns for Texas Southern, but also had four passes intercepted.
