William &, Mary 38, Northeastern 17

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Jake Phillips moved into third place on William & Mary's all-time touchdown passing list as the Tribe defeated Northeastern 38-17 on Saturday night.

Phillips' 3-yard touchdown pass to Chase Hill with 2:51 left in the second quarter was the 55th of his career and gave William & Mary (7-2, 5-1 Colonial Athletic Association) a 21-10 lead.

The Tribe, No. 14 in the Sports Network poll and 16th in the FCS Coaches poll, won its fifth straight game heading into next week's game at No. 1 James Madison.

Derek Cox scored William and Mary's first touchdown on an 89-yard, first-quarter punt return -- the Tribe's first since 2003 -- and its last, on a 12-yard interception return with 8:22 to play.

Cox became the first Tribe player to return a punt and an interception for touchdowns in the same season since current Minnesota Viking Darren Sharper did it in 1996.

The Wildcats (2-8, 1-5 CAA) outgained the Tribe by 109 yards in the first half, but two big plays -- a 61-yard pass completion to D.J. McAulay and a 67-yard run by Jonathan Grimes -- kept William and Mary in front.

Phillips was 15 of 22 for 217 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored on a 5-yard run.

Grimes finished with 130 yards on 16 carries and McAulay caught three passes for 96 yards.

Northeastern's Anthony Orio was 25 of 43 for 247 yards and a touchdown.
