CHARLESTON, S.C -- Quarterback Thomas Wilson and Brandon Newsome ran for two touchdowns each as Elon came from behind to beat The Citadel 27-16 in Southern Conference play on Saturday.
Trailing 16-14 in the fourth quarter, the Phoenix (4-5, 3-3) were able to retake the lead thanks to touchdown runs of 5 and 2 yards by Newsome.
Newsome's 5-yard touchdown run came with 13:15 left in the game and gave the Phoenix a 20-16 lead after a failed two-point conversion attempt. Newsome's second score came with 2:25 remaining.
Wilson scored on a 1-yard run to put the Phoenix up 14-10 in the third, but a 7-yard touchdown run by Terrell Dallas put The Citadel back in front 16-14 after a blocked extra point.
Wilson scored on a 1-yard run in the opening quarter to put Elon up 7-0. Ryan Sellers kicked a 23-yard field goal and Christian Robertson scored on a 7-yard run to give the Bulldogs (2-8, 0-7) a 10-7 lead.
