ORONO, Maine -- Pushaun Brown ran for 144 yards and a touchdown, and the Maine defense returned two fumbles for touchdowns as the Black Bears rallied to beat Massachusetts 32-21 on Saturday to remain tied atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings.
UMass led 14-10 at halftime and increased it to 11 points with 13:48 left in the third when Shane Viveiros intercepted Warren Smith and returned it 26 yards for a score.
But Maine (8-2, 6-1) turned the tables from that juncture, scoring 22 unanswered points. Smith's 6-yard run, Brian Harvey's 30-yard field goal and fumble returns for scores by both Troy Russell and Michael Cole sealed the comeback.
Maine just edged UMass 372-356 on total offense, but forced four Minutemen (5-5) turnovers while giving the ball away just once.
Smith finished with 184 passing yards with an interception and also rushed for 44 yards for Maine.
