TCU 44, SMU 0

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Lonta Hobbs ran for two touchdowns and backup quarterback Brandon Hassell threw for 264 yards and two scores to lead TCU to a 44-0 win over SMU on Saturday night.

Hassell completed 17 of 22 passes after taking over in the second quarter for Tye Gunn, who left after aggravating a slight rib injury suffered in the season opener. Gunn still improved to 10-0 as TCU's starter, the best record among active NCAA Division I-A quarterbacks.

SMU (0-2) lost its 14th straight game, the second longest streak in the nation behind Army's 16 in a row. But it was the Mustangs' first shutout loss in 46 games, since a 41-0 defeat at North Carolina State in 2000.

Hobbs' TD runs of 1 and 2 yards put TCU (2-0) ahead 14-0 in the first quarter. He finished with 87 yards on 19 carries, most in the first half.

Gunn was 8-of-12 for 124 yards in his shortened stint. TCU officials said he's expected to be fine and could have returned.

But the Frogs were fine without Gunn, whose winning streak includes just four wins in each of his first two injury-shortened seasons. Hassell was 7-2 as the starter last year.

Hassell threw TD passes on consecutive drives to Reggie Harrell (23 yards) and Cory Rodgers (1 yard) to extend TCU's halftime lead to 28-0. He completed 17 of 22 passes.

TCU had more than 500 yards of offense for the second week, with 562. But the defense was much better after allowing 637 yards in the season-opening 48-45 double-overtime win over Northwestern.

SMU had just 170 yards, including 113 passing by backup Tony Eckert (8-of-15 with two interceptions).

The Frogs won their record sixth straight against SMU but have only a slim 40-38-7 lead in the series. The Mustangs won 15 straight from 1972-86.

TCU has won 15 straight regular-season home games since a 37-30 loss to East Carolina on Oct. 30, 2001. That doesn't include a 34-31 loss to Boise State in the Fort Worth Bowl in December.
