Cumbie throws for 441 yards to rout Frogs

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- It took a while for Texas Tech to get started Saturday, but it was worth the wait.

The Red Raiders failed to score on their first seven drives and fell behind 21-0, but then scored 56 straight points in a 70-35 victory over TCU.

"I wasn't happy," said Tech coach Mike Leach of the slow start. "We didn't change plays from the first quarter to the second quarter. The plays were the same. It was chemistry and the way everyone came together."

The Red Raiders (2-1) came together behind the nation's leading passer. Sonny Cumbie completed 30 of 50 passes for 441 yards and four TDs. Taurean Henderson added three scoring runs and Jarrett Hicks caught eight passes for 211 yards and a TD in the first meeting since the teams were Southwest Conference rivals.

TCU (2-1) pulled to within 56-35 with about 11 minutes left, but then Cumbie and backup Cody Hodges each added a TD pass.

"It was not going to be about yardage; Tech's going to get passing yards," TCU Gary Patterson said. "It was going to be about keeping them out of the end zone. For the first 20 minutes we were a good football team and did that."

Cumbie entered the game as the nation's leading passer and is averaging 453 yards in his first three starts in Tech's wide-open passing scheme. He follows prolific Tech passers Kliff Kingsbury and B.J. Symons.

"It's tough when you look up there and you're down 21-0," said Cumbie, who was intercepted twice. "You want to press and make something happen, but you can't score 21 points on one drive, so you have to just take it one possession at a time."

Henderson ran for TDs of 4, 6 and 2 yards. Hicks, who was third in the nation in receiving yards per game coming in, had his third straight game of 150 yards or more.

"I've been fortunate to get a couple of yards the last couple of weeks," Hicks said. "It was great to get a win today, and I'm just trying to improve on it for next week."

It was the Horned Frogs' first visit to Lubbock since 1995. They lost that game 27-6. They later joined Conference USA, while Texas Tech became a member of the Big 12.

The loss ended TCU quarterback Tye Gunn's winning streak as a starter at 10. He had been chasing the school record of 12 straight set by Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh.

Gunn's ankle was bothering him and he left the game in the second quarter. Backup quarterback Brandon Hassell came in for the Horned Frogs' final drive of the first half.

"I couldn't plant and throw, which was making all the balls fly high on me," Gunn said.

Initially, the Red Raiders had difficulty sustaining drives. On their first seven possessions, the closest they got was the TCU 29, where they failed on a fourth-and-2 on a pass attempt from Cumbie to Hicks.

Tech has had trouble scoring the past two weeks.

"The big thing, the first two games, we kind of stopped ourselves," Cumbie said. "Today we were seven-or-even in the red zone. We knew it would snowball once it started."

Tech's first score came on Henderson's 4-yard TD midway through the second quarter. Then Tech pulled within 21-14 when Cumbie threw a short shovel pass to Johnnie Mack from the 8. The TD was set up by Danny Amendola's 52-yard put return to TCU's 3. A celebration penalty put the Red Raiders at the 18 and three plays later they scored.

Cumbie leveled it at 21 on the closing drive of the first half, capping a 65-yard drive with a 4-yard pass to Bristol Olomua.

Tech never trailed after that and even scored on defense. With about nine minutes remaining in the third quarter, Adell Duckett forced a fumble from Hassell and Keyunta Dawson recovered it and went in for the score to make it 42-21.

Down by 35 in the fourth quarter, TCU scored two touchdowns in 15 seconds. Hobbs scooted for 61 yards and a TD and the Horned Frogs trailed 56-28. On Tech's next possession, Mark Walker intercepted Cumbie then Hassell threw a 22-yard pass to Quentily Harmon.
