Autzen Stadium, EUGENE, OR
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- The Oregon Ducks didn't find the end zone as often as they would have liked, but it didn't matter against Montana. Kicker Paul Martinez could have won the game all by himself.
Martinez set a school record with six field goals and Kellen Clemens threw for 275 yards and two scores in Oregon's 47-14 win over the Division I-AA Grizzlies Saturday.
Demetrius Williams had five catches for 93 yards and a touchdown, and 12 other Ducks caught passes, but Oregon failed to establish a running game for the second straight week.
Martinez has 11 field goals in the Ducks' first two games -- two more than the team had all of last year -- but that isn't necessarily good news.
"Getting down to the 30 or the 20 (yard line) isn't going to cut it when we get into the Pac-10," Clemens said.
The Ducks relied heavily on the pass, with Clemens completing 24 of 40 in 3½ quarters.
Backups Dennis Dixon and Brady Leaf of Great Falls, Mont., also got in the game, Dixon hooking up for a 39-yard TD with Kyle Weatherspoon in the fourth quarter.
Terrence Whitehead, a 1,000-yard rusher in 2004, had just 35 yards on 18 carries, after running for 31 yards in a win over Houston last week. The Ducks (2-0) finished with just 87 yards on the ground.
The Grizzlies (1-1), ranked third in I-AA, stayed close early but weren't consistent enough on offense.
"We tried to wear them out, but you can't when you don't get first downs," said guard Chris Orwig.
The Ducks kept the pressure on Montana QB Jason Washington all day, causing him to rush and force throws. The Bowling Green transfer finished 10-of-23 passing for 85 yards.
"I might have underestimated the speed of their defensive line. ... probably three or four of those starters will be NFL players next year," he said.
Tailback Lex Hilliard had just 15 yards in 13 carries for Montana, which beat Division II Fort Lewis 55-0 last week.
The Ducks improved to 10-1 in home openers under head coach Mike Bellotti, who tied Len Casanova for second on the school's all-time wins list with his 82nd victory.
Oregon went up 6-0 when true freshman Jonathan Stewart picked the opening kick off the turf and returned it for an 83-yard touchdown.
Martinez hit field goals of 26 and 40 yards on the next two possessions to make it 12-0, but the Grizzlies got back in it. First, they stopped Whitehead on fourth-and-1 at the Montana 4 and then recovered the fumble on a botched backfield pass by Clemens.
On the next play, Washington hit Jon Talmage for a 23-yard TD score.
From then on it was all Ducks.
Clemens found Williams for a 17-yard touchdown pass. An interception and a fumble recovery on the next two possessions set up two more field goals. Martinez made his fifth of the day just before halftime to put the Ducks up 27-7.
But while Oregon has started the season with two convincing victories, the team still isn't entirely comfortable with its new spread offense.
"I am unsatisfied with this win," said Clemens. "First of all, we've got to run the ball better. We didn't get enough first downs. There were too many field goals. But we are 2-0."
