PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Michael Jump threw a 25-yard touchdown pass
-- his fifth scoring pass of the game -- to Greg Vaccaro in double
overtime to give La Salle a 39-32 win over Iona on Saturday.
La Salle (2-3, 1-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) gave Iona
a 1st-and-goal at the 9 with a holding penalty on the ensuing
possession, but forced three straight incompletions to end the
Jump pulled the Explorers within 1 with 1:33 left in the fourth
with a 35-yard touchdown pass to John Zabel -- the duo's second
touchdown of the game. Nick Scrivens, who took over the kicking
duties after La Salle failed on two earlier PAT attempts, knocked
through the extra point to tie the game 32-32.
Iona (2-3, 0-1) rallied from a 19-point halftime deficit with a
touchdown pass from Dustin Croick and touchdown runs by Croick and
Maurice Thomas. Chris Lofrese gave Iona a 24-19 lead with a 28-yard
field goal late in the third quarter.
La Salle's Josh Brumfield and Thomas traded touchdowns on the
fourth quarter to set up Jump's game-tying scoring pass to Zabel.
Jump finished 20-for-34 for 325 yards and five touchdowns --
including a 92-yarder to Zabel in the second quarter on 3rd-and-20
-- as the Explorers jumped out to a 19-0 lead at halftime. Zabel
finished with seven catches for 195 yards and a pair of touchdowns
and Brumfield also caught a touchdown pass for La Salle.
Each team failed to score in the first overtime, with La Salle
stopping Iona on four plays and having a 38-yard field goal attempt
by Scrivens blocked.
