UCLA rallies from 21 down, beats Wazzu in OT

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) -- Everyone knew Maurice Drew would be the one with the football when his team needed the winning score.

Drew scored from a yard out in overtime and Drew Olson threw five touchdowns as No. 12 UCLA came from 21 points down to beat Washington State 44-41 on Saturday.

"He just told me, 'Don't fumble it,' because he knew we were going to run it," Drew said of Olson before the game-winning run. "We had a bad first half and we just washed that away. We came out in the second half and played a great game. We just went out there and had fun."

The Bruins (6-0, 3-0 Pacific-10) snapped a four-game losing streak to the Cougars and posted their first win in Pullman since 1993.

UCLA coach Karl Dorrell said the road win was a tribute to offensive adjustments and defensive grit in the later stages of the game.

"I might have a heart attack one of these days, but I'll tell you what, if I have to win them all like this, I'll take it every time," Dorrell said after the Bruins won their third consecutive tight game.

"Offensively, we had some struggles right in the beginning there and then got into a sync, got into some rhythm," he said. "Defense came up with the right plays at the right time. In critical situations, when we needed some three-and-outs, they gave us some three-and-outs."

Olson completed 31-of-45 passes for 338 yards. He connected twice with Marcedes Lewis for TDs. Drew, Marcus Everett and Gavin Ketchum also caught scoring passes.

"It's not a fun feeling, especially in this kind of environment where the more a home team gets up, the harder it is to come back," Olson said of being behind by 21 points. "We were making mistakes in the first half and really didn't make too many in the second half. We just tried to go out and score as many points as possible."

Drew rushed 29 times for 115 yards, but the Cougars (3-3, 0-3) only kicked once to the return specialist who led the nation with 33.8 yards per punt return.

Olson hit Everett with a 9-yard scoring pass to tie it 38-38 with 44 seconds remaining.

WSU's Loren Langley hit a 37-yard field goal in overtime to give WSU a 41-38 lead.

When UCLA got the ball, a face-mask penalty gave the Bruins the ball on WSU's 5. Drew ran four yards to the WSU 1 and then bulled over for the winning score.

UCLA rolled up 516 yards of offense against the Cougars, who had 499 yards. Most of those came from Jerome Harrison, who ran for a career-high 260 yards. The leading rusher in the conference, he had 182 yards at the half.

WSU quarterback Alex Brink started out strong but was unable to move the team at crucial times in the second half. Brink, who threw six interceptions the last two games, had none against UCLA. He completed 19-of-33 attempts for 169 yards.

Brink said the Cougars may have gotten too conservative trying to protect their lead, allowing UCLA back into the game.

"We were certainly trying to protect the football and not make a huge mistake. That played into it," Brink said. "Obviously, they made defensive adjustments. Everybody does as the game goes along. They certainly turned it up a notch late in the game and we never really responded too well."

Olson connected with Drew for a 45-yard scoring play to climb within 28-21 midway through the third quarter. Justin Medlock cut the Cougars' lead to 38-31 with a 36-yard field goal with about 10 minutes remaining in the game.

WSU led 21-0 early in the second quarter after Harrison ran 57 yards for a score on the Cougars' first possession and Brink threw 6- and 9-yard TDs to Jason Hill and Michael Bumpus.

Harrison's 21-yard TD run put WSU up 28-7 after Ketchum caught a 21-yard scoring pass from Olson. Olson's 4-yard pass to Lewis just before halftime cut WSU's lead to 28-14.

WSU's Langley hit a career-long 48-yard field goal with 6:20 remaining in the third period to make it 31-21.

UCLA's 6-0 record is the Bruins' best start since going 6-0 to start the 2001 season.

It was the first UCLA victory over WSU since a 49-17 win in Los Angeles in 1998.

Dorrell said the rare Pullman win showed his team has heart.

"Guys that just believe they can win all the time and do that on the road in this kind of environment ... that was fun to see," he said. "Our guys pulling out the fourth quarter, doing the great things that we've been doing for the last three weeks."
