CINCINNATI (AP) -- Dustin Grutza passed for a season-high 230
yards and led all rushers with 72 yards to lead Cincinnati to a
20-14 win over Akron at Nippert Stadium.
Akron scored two first-quarter touchdowns but the Bearcats (3-3)
scored the next 20 points.
The Zips' Luke Getsy threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jabari
Arthur and Andre Walker ran the ball in from 1 yard out to
establish the first-quarter lead.
Akron (2-4) rushed for 33 yards in the first quarter but netted
just three yards on the ground the rest of the game.
Those were the only first-quarter touchdowns allowed by
Cincinnati this season.
Akron lost its second straight game of the season and dropped
the first meeting with Cincinnati since 1992.
Kevin Lovell kicked a 46-yard field goal to lead Cincinnati's
comeback with 12:13 left in the half.
After a three-and-out possession by the Zips, Cincinnati scored
its first touchdown on a 26-yard pass from Dustin Grutza to Brent
Celek to bring the score to 14-10 at halftime.
Lovell added a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter and
Butler Benton's 7-yard touchdown run put Cincinnati in front with
12:54 to go.
The Bearcats' defense took over from there, improving on its
stingy run defense that was ranked 33rd in the NCAA, allowing an
average of 102 yards rushing coming into the contest.
Getsy completed 16 of 33 attempts for 183 yards in the losing
effort. Grutza completed 16 of 24 passes and had one intercepted.
