SEATTLE (AP) -- Alex Brink completed a school-record 38 passes for 469 yards and five touchdowns, leading Washington State to a 45-17 rout of San Diego State on Saturday.

Brink was 38-for-47, bettering the 37 completed passes Drew Bledsoe had against Montana in 1992. Brink's 469 yards is the third-highest total in school history, trailing only his own 531 yards against Oregon State in 2005 and Bledsoe's 476 yards against Utah in the 1992 Copper Bowl.

Brink threw for 304 yards in the first half alone and stood on the sidelines wearing a baseball hat backward for the final 6 minutes. It was his the fourth game of 400 yards or more in his career, the most in WSU history.

About Brink's only mistake was an underthrown ball that was intercepted at the goal line by Vonnie Holmes late in the first half.

Brink spread his completions, hitting 10 different receivers. Four Cougars (1-1) caught his five touchdown throws, with Brandon Gibson catching his second TD of the day on a 31-yard pass midway through the fourth quarter.

Gibson finished with seven catches for 116 yards. Michael Bumpus had 10 catches for 118 yards and Charles Dillon caught eight passes for 100 yards. It was the first time three Cougars receivers topped 100 yards receiving since 2002.

Tight ends Jed Collins and Ben Woodard caught touchdowns in the second half.

The Aztecs (0-1) lost their 17th straight game to a Pac-10 school, a streak that dates back to the 1995 season when they beat California, and their defense looked no better than last year when they ranked among the bottom tier in the country in points allowed and total yards. San Diego State and Tulane were the only two teams in the country not to start their seasons last week.

The Cougars regularly took advantage of the Aztecs' soft defense, throwing short passes at the line of scrimmage and letting their speedy receivers do the work in the open field.

But Brink also took his shots downfield. Nine of his 23 completions in the first half went for 15 yards or more, capped by a 39-yard touchdown strike to Jeshua Anderson.

Playing from behind forced the Aztecs to throw the ball for most of the second half. Kevin O'Connell finished 28 of 44 passing for 273 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Bornes had a 59-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter, but the Aztecs didn't score again until the fourth.

The Cougars improved to 5-1 in games played at the home of the Seattle Seahawks, in what has become a yearly trip across the Cascade Mountains to play near the school's largest alumni base.
