WACO, Texas (AP) -- Blake Szymanski threw for 411 yards and five touchdowns to help Baylor beat Texas State 34-27 on Saturday night.

Szymanski was a yard short of the school-record passing mark he set last weekend in a 42-17 victory over Rice.

The sophomore threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Brad Taylor with 2:34 remaining to give Baylor (2-1) a 34-20 cushion.

Szymanski was 30-of-50 and threw TD passes to five receivers. He was at his best when Baylor was trying to hold the lead in the second half.

Texas State (1-2) cut it to 21-17 late in the third on Andrew Ireland's 46-yard field goal. But Szymanski was 6-of-7 for 64 yards on Baylor's next drive, and he capped it with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jay Finley on the first play of the fourth quarter to put the Bears up by 11.

Szymanski, who was 29-of-46 with a school-record six touchdowns last week, threw two first-half interceptions and struggled for most of the third quarter.

On Baylor's first three drives of the second half, Szymanski was 2-of-6 for 10 yards as the Bears failed to gain a first down.

But Szymanski found his groove just in time to help the Bears avoid being upset by a Texas State team that lost 45-27 to Division II Abilene Christian last week.

The Bears improved to 13-0 against teams in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division I-AA.

Texas State's Bradley George was 30-of-55 for 322 yards and two touchdowns, and Cameron Luke caught eight passes for 135 yards.

Krys Buerck had seven receptions for 85 yards, and Taylor had five catches for 85 yards.

Ireland kicked a 36-yard field goal to cut Baylor's advantage to 28-20.

Texas State got the ball back at its 15 with a chance to get closer and possibly tie. But the Bobcats could not get a first down, and Szymanski added his final scoring pass two plays later.

The Bobcats got to 34-27 with 1:10 left on George's 26-yard touchdown pass to Corey Hickerson. Baylor recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock to seal the win.

Szymanski picked up where he left off against Rice, going 14-of-20 for 205 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter.

He threw a 14-yard TD pass to Keegan Vann to put the Bears up 7-0, then added a 10-yard TD toss to Jacoby Jones on their next drive.

Texas State's Marcus Clark returned an interception 30 yards to the Baylor 15. George threw a 16-yard TD pass to Luke two plays later to bring the Bobcats to 14-7.

Texas State's momentum was broken on its next series when Baylor's Jordan Luke recovered Stan Zwinggi's fumble near midfield.

The Bears took advantage of the miscue when Szymanski threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Buerck to increase their lead to 21-7

Texas State went on a 13-play, 68-yard drive, capped by Alvin Canady's 1-yard run with 47 seconds left in the first half.
