Iowa State gets revenge, topping Kent State

Associated Press

AMES, Iowa -- Austen Arnaud and Phillip Bates each threw a touchdown pass to R.J. Sumrall and Iowa State turned a blocked punt and two fumble recoveries into 21 points in a 48-28 victory over Kent State on Saturday night.

Arnaud also ran for a touchdown to help the Cyclones (2-0) overcome a Kent State team that beat them last year in Gene Chizik's first game as coach at Iowa State.

This time Chizik saw his team hold on after taking a 28-14 lead with a three-touchdown flurry late in the first quarter. The Cyclones recovered four fumbles in all and blocked a second punt.

They needed all of those defensive plays because just as they did for the Golden Flashes (0-2) in their 23-14 victory last year, quarterback Justin Edelman and running back Eugene Jarvis gave Iowa State fits all night.

Edelman constantly avoided trouble with his scrambling while passing for 171 yards and three touchdowns. But he lost two fumbles, the most critical when he was stripped after a nice run on a scramble late in the game. Chris Brown recovered for Iowa State at his own 5.

Jarvis carried 24 times for 139 yards and a touchdown and added 60 yards on four catches and another TD.

Arnaud, the starter, completed 12 of 15 passes for 166 yards and scored on a 5-yard run to give ISU a 38-21 lead with 16 seconds left in the third quarter. He took it in one play after Kent State's Josh Pleasant muffed a punt and Leonard Johnson recovered for the Cyclones.

Bates, who alternated with Arnaud throughout the game, was 3-for-6 for 48 yards and added 83 yards rushing, including a 56-yard scamper to set up a touchdown in the final minute.

Grant Mahoney kicked second-half field goals of 30 and 48 yards to give Iowa State some breathing room. The second came after Edelman's 36-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Boyes cut the lead to 38-28.

Down 7-0, Iowa State scored three touchdowns in a span of 4:55 late in the first quarter, helped by a blocked punt and a fumble.

Jason Scales raced in untouched from the right side to block Matt Rinehart's punt and the ball rolled out of bounds at the Kent State 1. Scales squeezed into the end zone on the next play.

After Kent State went three-and-out, Iowa State needed only five plays to go up 14-7, Bates hitting Sumrall on a perfectly thrown 24-yard touchdown pass. It was the 104th reception of Sumrall's career, but his first touchdown.

Iowa State got the ball back when Josh Raven jarred it loose from Leneris Muldrow and recovered at the Kent State 20. Bates hit Houston Jones for 17 yards and J.J. Bass swept right end for a touchdown on the next play.

Edelman's 29-yard TD pass to Jarvis drew Kent State to 21-14, but Iowa State came right back, Arnaud hitting Sumrall on the fly on a 49-yard scoring play.
