CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Kyle Dougherty kicked a 40-yard field goal as the clock ran down for the fourth period to break a 24-24 tie and lead Southern Illinois to a 27-24 win over Northern Iowa on Saturday.
Dougherty also had another field goal for Southern Illinois (2-1).
The Salukis started the game with a 97-yard kickoff return touchdown run from running back Larry Warner. Northern Iowa (2-2) came back in the second period with a touchdown off a 5-yard run from quarterback Pat Grace.
Southern Illinois answered with 17 points in the second, two touchdown runs from Warner and Bryce Morris and the field goal from Dougherty. The score was 24-7 at the half for the Salukis.
The Panthers came back from the break to score 17 unanswered points. Running back Corey Lewis had a touchdown off a 1-yard run, kicker Billy Hallgren had a field goal and wide receiver Victor Williams caught a pass from Grace for a touchdown.
Grace threw for 123 yards to lead the Panthers, who had 22 first downs to 13 for the Salukis. Chris Dieker passed for 182 yards for Southern Illinois.
Northern Iowa outrushed Southern Illinois 242 yards to 49, earning 365 total offensive yards to 231 for Southern Illinois.
