BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Tailback Alex Broomfield ran for one touchdown and threw for another as Northeastern defeated UC Davis on Saturday, 27-10.
Nate Thellen added three interceptions for Northeastern (1-3), returning his final pick 92 yards for a touchdown with three minutes to play.
After falling behind early, Northeastern's defense was dominant. NU sacked UC Davis quarterback Greg Denham five times and intercepted him four times. David Akinniyi recovered two fumbles, Wil Colon had two sacks and a forced fumble and Jason Vega added an interception and 1 1/2 sacks.
Broomfield rushed for 152 yards on 23 carries, including runs of 48 and 39 yards. He had a 1-yard scoring run in the second quarter and threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Brian Mandeville as Northeastern took a 21-10 lead at the half.
For UC Davis (1-4), Brandon Tucker rushed for 118 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries and added 57 yards on seven receptions. Bakari Grant caught eight passes for 96 yards for Davis.
UC Davis led 10-0 after a 27-yard field goal by Davis' Sean Kelley on the first play of the second quarter. But Northeastern's defense took over, holding Davis scoreless the rest of the way. Colon's strip sack and Akinniyi's recovery at the 4 set up one touchdown and Thellen's first interception set up another.
