NATCHITOCHES, La. -- Byron Lawrence ran 118 yards and two touchdowns to help Northwestern State beat Sam Houston State 24-16 on Saturday.
Lawrence had touchdown runs of 3 yards in the first and 9 yards in the second to give the Demons (5-3, 2-1 Southland Conference) a 14-3 halftime lead.
Rhett Bomar completed 23 of 47 passes for 314 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, the only turnover of the game, for the Bearkats (2-4, 0-3).
Bomar hit Chris Lucas on a 47-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter to pull the Bearkats within four points, but William Griffin ran it in from 2 yards out to start the fourth and Robert Weeks hit a 36-yard field goal with 1:20 remaining to put the Demons up 24-10.
Bomar hit Jake Lebens on a 17-yard pass as time expired after turning the ball over on downs three minutes earlier.
