THIBODAUX, La. -- James Aston ran for 142 yards and four touchdowns to help Sam Houston State to a 47-37 victory against Nicholls State on Saturday.
Rhett Bomar completed 25 of 48 passes for 394 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Bearkats (4-4, 2-3 Southland Conference).
Chris Bunch completed 5 of 12 passes for 107 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, and also added 92 yards on 11 carries for the Colonels (2-5, 2-3).
Bomar connected with Trey Payne on a 6-yard touchdown, and Aston scored on runs of 2 and 4 yards to give the Bearkats a 24-0 first-quarter lead.
Aston's next 4-yard scoring run made it 31-3 midway through the second, but Isa Hines' 4-yard run and Vincent Montgomery's 5-yard score cut the Colonels' deficit to 31-16 at halftime.
Bunch hit Hines on a 66-yard pass to open the third that pulled Nicholls State within eight points, but Aston's 14-yard touchdown run and Bomar's 27-yard pass to Jason Madkins put the Bearkats ahead 44-23 at the start of the fourth.
